Welcome to Killarney / Glengarry
The first plan for the suburb of Killarney and Glengarry was registered in 1906 and the land was formally annexed in 1910 with single–storey houses being built. The names Killarney (in Ireland) and Glengarry (in Scotland) were chosen to help give Calgary’s newest settlers a sense of home.
The majority of building in Killarney/Glengarry took place after World War II when soldiers returned home. Property lots were sold to these soldiers for just $25 to help them settle down, rebuild their lives and raise their families.

Today Killarney is a community in transition. The past 10-15 years has seen many of the original homes torn down in favor of “infills” in the form of luxury side-by-side two story properties. While the ongoing development is bringing a new culture and a new generation of owners to the community, many of the original homes and owners remain giving Killarney a diverse and unique make-up.
Centrally located and well connected to transportation corridors, Killarney/Glengarry is attractive to the Downtown business elite and Calgary’s young, highly educated, and successful working class.

Killarney/Glengarry Housing Market Trends
Killarney continues it’s steady make-over from 1950’s bungalows to modern and slick infill housing options. The zoning in most of the community combined with the sizable lots make the area a desirable option for developers looking to capitalize on Calgarians wanting to escape the lengthy commute from the suburbs. At the same time, those buyers are looking to maintain the size of homes popular in those outlying communities as well as the amenities that come with suburban living. Many of the resulting developments are subdivided lots with semi-detached properties sharing a common (party) wall. Most of these homes feature 2 storeys with developed basements and detached double garages. The one downfall can be limited backyard space. Luckily Killarney offers numerous parks and green spaces to run around and stretch out.
Killarney has also become an attractive option for developers seeking to do smaller scale condominium developments in the form of luxury townhouse style units or stacked townhouse options. While Calgary has no true “Brownstones” several projects in Killarney have sought to appeal to the market’s desire for brick townhomes.
As an inner-city community, property values have remined steady in Killarney. However, the ever-present development of new infills has started to weigh on the value of some of the older infill designs as builders continually refine floorplans, layouts, and finishings to appeal to more modern buyer’s tastes.
